Level 1

Step 01 | High, Mid and Low C

Counting 3 spaces up, you'll find High C.
Counting 3 spaces down, you'll find Low C.

Exercise 01 | Naming the Keys

Ready for an easy exercise?
Find the 3 C's on the Keyboard.

Step 02 | Middle B-C-D

Once you get a feel for High and Low C, you'll be able to identify the neighboring tones - namely B and D.

Exercise 02 | Using the G clef

Locate the keys on your keyboard/piano.

Step 03 | FG on both clefs

What are the clefs for?

The G 𝄞 clef tells you were G is (right hand).
The F 𝄢  clef tells you were F is (left hand).

Notice that the G line is the 2nd line above middle C, and the F line is the 2nd line below.

Exercise 03 | Find the Keys

In this exercise it's important to notice whether the F or G are either above or below middle C!

Step 04 | FG + High, Mid and Low C

Use the shape and position of the Clefs as a memory aid. Remember:

"The G 𝄞 clef tells you were G is (right hand).
The F 𝄢  clef tells you were F is (left hand)."

Make sure you dominate the previous exercises before trying this one.

Exercise 04 | Find middle C-E-G

Tell the difference between F, G, C that are either above or below middle C.

Step 05 | 4ths and 5ths

Remember the intervals in the Basic Level. Now, we'll expand our recognition abilities with two new intervals.

Look carefully at their shape and compare it between them.

Exercise 05 | Find the Keys

Above you can see the shape of the 4ths and 5ths.

Now lets have a Interval party with all of them:
2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th.

Remember to look at their shape.

Step 05 | F line to G line - Range

In this step, you'll use the skills you acquired in Basic Level, which includes the notes surrounding middle C.

Step 06 | Low and Mid C-D-E

This exercise includes you're old friend, the "Dog House".
Down below and up in the middle of the staff.

Exercise 06 | Find F and G in both clefs

You only need to decide whether you are looking at a C, D or E.
Only members of the dog house family.

Step 07 | Low and Mid F-G-A-B

This is one includes only the members of the Big House family- Fox, Gorilla, Astronaut, Bear.

Watch carefully whether they are above or below middle c.

Find F, G, A, B on both clefs. Remember the F and G lines in Step 03

Step 08 | Low C to High C - Range

Congratulations! You are on your way to becoming a very capable musician- with the ability to read any music that comes your way.

Now it's time to put it to the test.
The first diagram below is to help remember the landmarks you'll use to identify the notes.

Exercise 08 | Find F and G in both clefs

The image above shows you the most easily recognized spots on the staff. Use them to your advantage.
